Day 1: Arrival

You will be met at the International Airport of Kilimanjaro by your driver/guide and our representative We will take you to the Meru View Lodge, charming lodge situated right at the slopes of Mt. Meru. Children will enjoy the casual atmosphere and can roam around in the park style garden. Alternative accommodation is at Kiboko Lodge, right at the edge of Arusha National Park with wonderful views towards Mount Meru. Our Safari manager will come to meet you and to provide you with a safari briefing.

Day 2: Cultural Encounters in Arusha

Today you will take an excursion in the nearby surroundings of your lodge, meaning you can relax a little, sleep in a bit if you want, and stay in your lodge without having to pack up again after just one night.

You have the choice between three different options. Please choose the one suiting the needs of your family best:

Arusha National Park

After breakfast drive to Arusha National Park, once the site of the action packed Hollywood movie Hatari, starring John Wayne and Hardy Kruger. You pass by herds of zebra, buffalo, and giraffe on the savannah. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Momella Lake, famous for huge flocks of colourful flamingos and its views at majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. You continue in the afternoon with a game drive around the different habitats in this truly beautiful national park. There are black and white colobus monkeys (unique to this location northern Tanzania), Sykes’s and vervet monkeys, shy forest duikers, elusive leopards and substantial herds of antelope.

If you wish, you can hike at the slopes of Mt Meru in dense forest or at the Crater rim while an armed ranger escorts you to protect you from some of the larger animals.

Alternatively, you could do some cultural visits instead of visiting Arusha National Park. We offer as follows:

Mulala

Full day excursion to Mulala, a picturesque village located of the slopes of Mt Meru, to visit the people living here and to get a glimpse of the daily life of Meru farmers growing vegetables and crops. Together with a local guide you walk from Mama Anna’s farm, crisscrossing coffee plantations and banana farms to the top of Lemeka Hill, and back down to the Marisha River, which is home of colorful birds and playful monkey. The village women will prepare some simple but tasty lunch for you before you return to Arusha.

Nkoaranga Village

Full day excursion to the small village of Nkoaranga. This is home to a local fair-trade coffee growers’ cooperative, made up of a group of small-farm coffee growers working together to build a sustainable, naturally grown, fair trade coffee business. Visit the coffee plantations and see the different steps of coffee growing. Learn about how coffee beans are collected, processed, roasted, ground and carefully packed. All proceeds from coffee sales return to the local farmers for reinvestment in the project, and to build their burgeoning organic farming project – with the first organic bean harvest scheduled within the next two years. Lunch is taken in the village before you return to Arusha. A walk through the village and at the local school or an orphanage is also included if desired.

Day 3: Lake Manyara

After breakfast we depart for Lake Manyara (driving time some 2.5 – 3 hours). Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is recognized for its incredible beauty. You can see many game animals such as Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Impala, hippo and others. After spending most of the day in the car you might enjoy a leisurely stroll along Kirurumu River which has to be crossed on large rocks a couple of times. This is a great chance to get out your vehicle and explore this beautiful area on foot. Note that wet muddy feet cannot entirely be avoided…!

You will make the short journey towards Ngorongoro directly after your day of game driving at Lake Manyara, meaning you can make it down to the crater floor early morning the following day. Spend the evening at Country Lodge, an rustic lodge at the outskirts of Ngorongoro Conservation Area with comfortable rooms in a large tropical garden around an inviting swimming pool.

Day 4: Around Karatu

Today you spend a day around Karatu and visit the lively market, you go on a guided walk either to the nearby coffee plantations or if you want it a bit more sportive to Ganeko Hill in some distance. If you are lucky one of the weekly colorful Maasai Markets is held, and you can visit an old descendent from the ancient Iraqw Tribe who will be happy to introduce you to his culture and history.

2nd overnight at Country Lodge (or alternative at Bashay Village).

Day 5: Ngorongoro – Serengeti

After breakfast you start on your way to Serengeti National Park (driving time some 4 hours, but with plenty to see on the way!) En route you will see grazing zebras, antelopes and giraffes and sometimes some buffalos hiding in the bush. You will visit a MaasaiBoma (traditional village) where some Maasai Warriors will welcome you, show you around and explain their traditional life. They will also show you their famous jumping dance and invite you to join in if you like! You can also see inside houses, meet children, ask questions and take photos!

After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) in Serengeti you will continue further into the park and go on a game drive in the afternoon. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species.

Tonight and the following night you spend in a comfortable tented camp at the edge of the famous Serengeti, with views over the endless savannah with some animals and typically African acacia trees. Enjoy some relaxing hours at the camp fire under open sky after dinner, chatting with other guests and the charismatic security guards.

Day 6: Serengeti

Spend a leisurely day on game drives around Serengeti. Return to your lodge for a relaxed lunch under the shade of an old acacia tree.

In the afternoon you can go out again on game drives or undertake a nature walk around the camp with some resident tribesmen. They are happy to share their knowledge of plants and animals surrounding them and introduce you into their use of traditional bow and arrow for hunting.

Day 7: Serengeti – Ngorongoro

Early start today for an early morning game drive to see also nocturnal predators returning from hunting and animals waking up in early morning light. You can take breakfast boxes with you and have a bush breakfast when the sun is up before you visit the interesting documentation center about Serengeti at Seronera . After breakfast will proceed to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and go for an afternoon a Nature Walk (depending on weather conditions) at the Northern Crater Rim of NgorongoroCrater inhabited by buffaloes, elephants, baboons, monkeys and different species of birds. Escorted by a ranger or Maasai Guide you follow animal paths through dense.

Transfer time without game viewing 3- 3.5 hours.

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will explore the famous Ngorongoro Crater during a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater often described as one of the wonders of the world. It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest animal populations. It is one of the few places where the rare black rhino can be observed in their natural setting. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. With a bit of luck the ‘Big Five’ can be spotted during one game drive only.

Day 9: Lake Eyasi

From Ngorongoro you proceed to Lake Eyasi home to the hunter-gathers ethnic group of the Hadzabe Bushmen bearing similar characteristics to those of Bushmen at Southern Africa. The small people of this indigenous tribe are probably the last living in true harmony with nature and have a wealth of Fauna and Flora knowledge to share with us. Around Lake Eyasi you will also visit the remotely living Datoga Tribe famous for their colorful leather dresses. The day is filled with visits and cultural encounters around Lake Eyasi until you enjoy a beautiful sunset at the banks of Lake Eyasi.

Day 10: Lake Eyasi – Arusha – Kilimanjaro – Departure

In the morning you go out with the Hadzabe Bushmen for a morning hunt or walk (depending on your schedule either at 06:30 or later around 09:00 hrs). After completing your visit with the Hadzabe and Datoga you return to Arusha and onwards to Kilimanjaro for departure, where your family safari ends. A day room will be arranged for your comfort.     Day 1: Arrival

    You will be met at the International Airport of Kilimanjaro by your driver/guide and our representative We will take you to the River trees Country Inn, a charming lodge situated at the banks of picturesque Usa River on an old German coffee estate, offering stunning views towards Mt. Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro. Children can roam around in the park style garden and watch naughty vervet monkeys and wise owls in the old trees along the river. A small pool is very inviting during the warmer months of the year. Alternative accommodation is at Mount Meru Game Lodge, a fantastic and atmospheric lodge with its own adjacent wildlife sanctuary. Animals such as zebra, ostrich and various antelope can be seen wandering by whilst you enjoy a tea or a soda on the lawn. Our safari manager will come to meet you and to provide you with a briefing on your Family Safari Tanzania North.

    Day 8 – 11: Beach Extension

    Relax and enjoy the beaches of Zanzibar.

    Day 12: Spice Tour

    After breakfast transfer to Stone Town. On the way we will do the famous Spice Tour. We have developed a special Spice Tour with information not only about spices, but also organically grown herbs and a detailed description about their traditional uses in medicine cosmetics and cooking. After the tour we invite for an sumptuous and filling lunch at the Spice Restaurant, where you can taste the spices and fruits you have just learned about and seen growing fresh.

    In the afternoon you have some time at leisure. Your hotel is conveniently located at Stone Town’s beautiful waterfront where in the afternoon the locals gather together for some football, gymnastics or just some relaxed socializing on the sand.     Day 13: Zanzibar Town

    In the morning we will show you Zanzibar’s fabled old town on our Historical Stone Town Tour. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a beautiful and interesting place where history appears to stand still. With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People’s Palace) and the Arab Fort amongst others, it is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. You will see Zanzibar’s bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques! Rest in the afternoon, explore the many curio shops at leisure, enjoy a cold drinks at a beachside bar, or go on a boat trip to the neighboring islands (extra cost).

    Day 14: Departure

    End of your Family Safari Tanzania North with Zanzibar extension. Departure transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your departure.

      Day 1: Arusha –Lake Manyara

      In the morning you’ll drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park. This beautiful park with it’s lush vegetation and tropical forests of giant fig and mahogany trees, takes its name from the Maasai word for “euphorbia tirucalli”, a bush which is used to make a thorny hedge to protect their cattle. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and a variety of antelope inhabit the park as well as a variety of monkeys and a large population of hippos. If you are lucky you may see the Manyara lions, well known for their tree climbing habits, lazily resting on the branches of an “Acacia tortilis” tree. The birdlife is also abundant with flamingos, pelicans, hornbills and plenty of forest species.

      Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater

      After breakfast you proceed for Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After arrival you decent into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. Your Driver/Guide will be in contact with other safari drivers and will amaze you with his skill at locating the hidden animals.

      Day 3: Tarangire National Park

      Your Tour proceed with the drive to Tarangire, Tanzania’s sixth largest national park and sanctuary for an unusually large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including lion, leopard, cheetah and up to six thousand elephant.

      Day 4: Tarangire-Arusha

        Day 3: Serengeti

        After breakfast you will proceed to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater considered as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls the Ngorongoro Crater has the highest wild animal density worldwide. Among the species are lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. You might expect to see the ‘Big Five’ in one day.

        Day 5: Ngorongoro – Arusha

        In the morning when the morning mist has cleared away (depending on weather) you go on a Nature Walk at the Northern Crater Rim of Ngorongoro Crater inhabited by buffaloes, elephants, baboons, monkeys and different species of birds. Escorted by a ranger or Maasai Guide you follow animal paths through dense bush (This part is option for an extra cost ).

                Day 1: Arrival

                You will be met at the International Airport of by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the exclusive Shangazi House. This charming Lodge is situated in an old mansion at the sole of Mt. Meru in a nice tropical garden. Our safari manager will come to meet you and to provide you with a briefing for your Luxury Camping Safari.

                Day 2 – 3: Tarangire National Park

                After breakfast, you will depart by road to your first private tented camp, situated along the boundary of Tarangire National Park. Tarangire, Tanzania’s sixth largest national park is known for it’s majestic baobab trees that dot the landscape, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. The park supports a great diversity of wildlife, especially during in the dry season of July to November, when the Tarangire River provides the only permanent water supply in the area. During this season wildlife, including up to 6.000 elephants concentrate along the river.

                Day 4: Lake Manyara

                After breakfast you’ll drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park. This beautiful park with it’s lush vegetation and tropical forests of giant fig and mahogany trees, takes its name from the Maasai word for “euphorbia tirucalli”, a bush which is used to make a thorny hedge to protect their cattle. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and a variety of antelope inhabit the park as well as a variety of monkeys and a large population of hippos. If you are lucky you may see the Manyara lions, well known for their tree climbing habits, lazily resting on the branches of an “Acacia tortilis” tree. The birdlife is also abundant, with flamingoes, pelicans, hornbills and plenty of forest species.

                Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

                This morning your drive takes you the short distance to the “eighth wonder of the world”, the Ngorongoro Crater and to Ngorongoro Conservation Area for an excursion to Northwest Ngorongoro Conservation Area with a drive to Olmoti and Empakai Crater. At Olmoti Crater you can walk down to the relatively shallow crater. The grassy caldera is home to eland, bushbuck and sometimes buffaloes. Water flows across the crater to the south side where it ours out to a small but spectacular waterfall known as Munge Stream. The six kilometer wide Empakai Crater is dominated by a deep soda lake which occupies nearly half the floor. Water birds and wildlife is often seen around the lake.

                Your lodging for the next two nights will be at the NgorongoroSopa or Serena Lodge. Perched on the edge of the crater, this beautiful lodge affords panoramic views of the crater floor.

                Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater

                After and early breakfast you will depart for an entire day of wildlife viewing on the crater floor. You’ll’ have a picnic lunch in a secluded spot and return to your lodge in the afternoon. Later on you go for a Walking safari at the Northern Crater Rim of Ngorongoro Crater inhabited by buffaloes, elephants, baboons, monkeys and different species of birds.                 Day 7 – 10: Serengeti National Park

                After breakfast depart for the “Great Serengeti”, likely the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. The vast Serengeti plains cover an area of over 14,763 square kilometers and during the months of the migration, is the habitat of huge numbers of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle with estimates of up to 1.5 million. From December through March they concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains, where the calving season takes place, attracting the attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena. In June and July they move into the western corridor and in October and November the herds can usually be found in the northern Serengeti. The Serengeti “Kopjes”, massive boulder islands of granite standing in a sea of grass, provide shelter to a great variety of plants and animals, from the elusive leopard to the tiny dikdik.

                You will spend four nights in a luxury private camp, set in a wilderness area, depending on the season and movement of the animals.

                Day 11: Serengeti – Arusha

                THE TENTS

                The tents are Selous style large, walk-in, insect proof canvas tents with private verandahs. Private bush shower and toilet are attached to the back of the tent. Towels are provided. Two wash basins are available for washing up after game drives and in the morning (or whenever you like, all you have to do is ask for warm water). Your beds are comfortable wooden frame beds with thick foam mattresses, made up with fresh linen, two blankets and an African style bed-cover. King size beds can be arranged upon request (before the safari begins). Other furnishings in the tent include: A wooden bedside table, a hanger stand, a writing table, two safari chairs, two woolen African style carpets, 1 kerosene hurricane style lantern, 1 electric lamp and 1 flashlight, kanga table cloths, mirrors, waste and laundry baskets.

                BUSH CUISINE

                Meals are taken in a spacious mess tent with insect proof windows. The tables are made of African olive wood and covered with local fabric table cloths. The area is lit with pressure lamps. The bar is stocked with cold soft drinks, mineral water and beer; wine and spirits are also available as is ice. It is suggested that clients bring their favorite spirits or order it in advance. All bottled beverages are billed at the end of the safari with the exception of half a bottle of wine per person for the evening meal.

                Delicious 3 course meals are cooked in the bush kitchen, an open air affair, yet highly effective as your taste buds will tell you. Menus include: A selection of salads carefully washed with boiled water, soup, meat, fish, and vegetables, pasta or rice, fresh fruits, and cakes for dessert. Special dietary requests can be accommodated and should be booked in advance.

                    Day 3 – 4: Lake Natron

                    In the morning you drive via Engaruka Town towards Lake Natron on a partly bumpy and dusty road. En route you see many Masai villages, termite mounds, gazelle, giraffe, zebra, baboons, bee boxes, and birds such as vultures, ostrich, starlings, Cory Bustards, and kites. The transfer takes you some 4 hours. After checking in at your lodge and some lunch you go in the afternoon on a guided walk around Lake Natron the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania (600m / 2000 ft) and famous for a vast numbers of flamingos and other water birds due to a high concentrate of sodium carbonate, algae, and zooplankton. You can go for a hike up the NgareSero River which flows in the Lake Natron In contrast to the surrounding dry landscape, here you can find a small paradise. After a strenuous walk up the stream, we reach the source of the river, in cascading waterfalls the river gushes out of the mountains. It is an excellent swim in the river and under the waterfalls for a nice cool-down from the hot sun. There may be baboons or other wildlife in the gorge.

                    Day 5: Lake Natron – Serengeti

                    After breakfast you visit Lake Natron to see the flamingos Lake Natron is famous for. If you wish, you can walk at the lake shore in salty water. Afterwards you start your way towards Serengeti with some wildlife and many Maasai villages to see along the way. You cross Loliondo Area, a concession bordering Serengeti National Park and drive further towards the Western Corridor where the Great Migration is expected to pass through in June/July. After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) at Serengeti you will continue further into the park and go on a game drive on your way to Ikoma or Central Serengeti.

                    Day 7: Lake Victoria

                    In the morning proceed with Game-drives at Serengeti on the way to Lake Victoria. In the afternoon drive into the nearby hills to take a look at rural Africa, passing through the small villages of the Sukuma people, who grow cotton, ground nuts, sorghum and cassava as well as keeping livestock. Life carries on simply as it has done for centuries, but with a few poignant reminders of the 20th Century!

                    Day 8: Lake Victoria

                    In the morning traditional fishing canoe trip to a fishing village. Local fishermen will paddle the canoes and, on the way, the scene is typical of the lakeshore with women toiling in the fields and men fishing. The paddlers sing as they work taking one back in time as they sing traditional songs of home, of cattle and of life. In the distance can be seen the white lateen sails of fishing boats or dhows, returning from a night of fishing far out on the Lake. In the afternoon you proceed with village visits around Lake Victoria. Another Highlight of the day is the visit at a traditional healer in one of the Sukuma villages.

                    Day 9: Lake Ndutu

                    Return to the Serengeti. Depending on the time of year and the location of the migration herds, you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species. Your driver/guide will be in contact with other safari drivers and will amaze you with his skill at locating the hidden animals.

                    Day 10: Ngorongoro

                    After breakfast we depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Upon arrival at late morning, you will spend the day game driving in the crater. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and many other species.

                    Overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge or Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge. All meals included.

                    Day 11: Ngoronogoro – Lake Eyasi

                    From Ngorongoro you proceed to Lake Eyasi – home to the hunter-gathers, an ethnic group of the Hadzabe Bushmen bearing similar characteristics to those of Bushmen in Southern Africa. The small people of this indigenous tribe are probably the last living in true harmony with nature and have a wealth of Flora and Fauna knowledge to share with us. The two days are filled with tours and game walks guided by bushmen taking you on their traditional hunting tracks.

                    Day 12: Tarangire

                    After breakfast we depart for Tarangire, Tanzania’s sixth largest national park and sanctuary for an unusually large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including lion, leopard, cheetah and up to six thousand elephant.

                    Day 13: Arusha

                    One final morning game drive before leaving. In the afternoon we will reach Arusha and you will stay in a day room at Kigongoni or Mount Meru Game Lodge or similar. This is where your Explore Northern circuit safari in Tanzania tour ends. Departure transfer to airport for your onwards journey. Breakfast and lunch included.
